How and Why We Limit Technology When Homeschooling
Share
Hello, fellow homeschooling parents!
As an Australian parent of a sassy almost five year old on her educational journey, I've found myself constantly questioning the impact of technology. While I do believe that technology offers incredible resources and learning opportunities, it's important to approach it with balance and intention, especially for our young ones. Today, I’d like to share some insights on how and why we limit technology in our household. You might relate to some of what I will share. There is no judgement from me when it comes to technology. It is a very personal decision but I wanted to share what I have found works for us.
Firstly, why limit technology? At this young age, children thrive on tactile, hands-on experiences that stimulate their senses and nurture their creativity. Overexposure to screens can lead to reduced attention spans and hinder the development of essential social skills. By limiting technology, we encourage our daughter to engage more deeply with the world around her—through nature walks, imaginative play, and cozy reading sessions on our lounge together.
Now, how do we manage this balance? We’ve introduced a simple rule: technology is fine but there are limits to how much. This means we use a timer to ensure that the TV doesn't get turned out and just becomes part of our day incidentally (turned on and left on in the background). I also set clear boundaries, making sure she is aware that when the timer goes off, the TV goes off too. It honestly was a struggle to start with because it was just a habit to turn it on when she came downstairs. Now there are days when she doesn't even ask for it to go on.
Incorporating technology mindfully can be enriching, but it’s crucial to create a rhythm that prioritises real-world interactions and personal growth. Are there days that the TV goes on without the timer? Absolutely! It isn't about being perfect. I encourage you to find what works best for your family, fostering an environment where curiosity and connection flourish beyond the screen. Let’s empower our children to be both tech-savvy and deeply connected to the world around them.
I would love to know what approach your family has with technology.
Happy homeschooling!
Note: This is the timer our family uses. I love that she also doesn't get upset with me when it's time to switch off the TV because I am not the one asking her to turn it off.
