How to Include Sensory Activities into Your Week
Share
Hi everyone,
As an Australian homeschooling mother to an almost five-year-old, I’ve come to appreciate the immense value of sensory activities in our weekly routine. These activities not only engage my child’s curious mind but also support their developmental growth in a fun and interactive way. Here’s a glimpse into how we incorporate sensory activities into our homeschooling week:
- Nature Walks and Exploration: We dedicate 10-20 minutes walking our dog each morning to explore our local park or nature reserve or even just walk around the block. This allows my child to touch, smell, and see the rich biodiversity around us, from the rustling eucalyptus leaves to the laughing Kookaburras. These walks prompt endless questions and discussions, providing a natural segue into topics like ecology and conservation.
-
Sensory Bins: I create sensory trays using materials like rice, beans, or sand. You could also set up themed sensory trays. For example, a “beach day” bin might include sand, seashells, and small plastic sea creatures. My daughter loves digging, sorting, adding water and using her imagination. It’s a fantastic way to foster fine motor skills and creativity. Here is the link to the sensory tray from the picture below: Unicorn/Mermaid Sensory Bin Set - Assorted - Kmart

Cooking and Baking: Involving my child in the kitchen is a multi-sensory experience. Measuring ingredients, mixing dough, and tasting new flavours are not only educational but also help with math skills and following instructions. Plus, there’s nothing better than the aroma of freshly baked goods wafting through the house!
- Art and Craft: We dedicate time throughout the week to messy art projects. Whether it’s finger painting or clay modelling, these activities help develop hand-eye coordination and self-expression. The vibrant colours and different textures make for a rich sensory experience.
Incorporating sensory activities into our homeschooling routine has transformed learning into an immersive experience. It nurtures my child’s natural curiosity and supports their holistic growth, making each week both educational and enjoyable. As a parent, it’s rewarding to witness the world through their eyes, enriched by these sensory adventures. An added bonus is that while she is busy doing these activities, I am also free to sit and have a coffee or get something done.
Happy Homeschooling.
